How Can You Help?

Volunteering

We have always welcomed volunteer teams and individuals. In the past we have had successful relationships with volunteers from the United States and Great Britain. For more information about how you can help Shelter of Care as a volunteer, click on the links to the right.

Giving

Shelter of Care is funded entirely by gifts and donations. Without the generous gifts of our sponsors, we would be completely unable to continue to help abandoned children.

Donate online using credit/debit cards or your Paypal account (more information).

Alternatively if you are in the UK or the US, you can make donations through our partner agencies in those countries. Please click the links on the right for details.

Praying

As much as we need and value your financial giving, we also need your prayers. There is no substitute for regular, focused prayer support.

Your prayers really do make a difference.

As you explore our website, please make a note of issues that you would like to keep on praying for. Perhaps you could make a commitment to check out our Praises & Prayers page regularly to find out what is happening each month so that you can focus your prayers.

Requirements for Volunteers
orange_gradient

Shelter of Care works with vulnerable young people who have already suffered abandonment and mistreatment in their own lives. In light of this, we have to be very careful when considering volunteers and we ask all potential applicants to check that they meet a few basic requirements before they consider offering to become a volunteer.

In particular, it is important to us that for each volunteer we have a point of contact with someone to whom the volunteer is spiritually and personally accountable. We ask therefore that before you make a decision to apply as a volunteer, you should ensure that you can provide personal recommendations from a person in authority in your Church (a Pastor, or Minister or equivalent). We will not be able to accept applications from those who are acting entirely alone and without this accountability.

In order to be accepted as a volunteer, you must be a committed Christian, prepared to give details of your personal testimony, and a regular attender (preferably a member) at a Christian church. If you will be working directly with the young people, you must be able to show that you have had some experience of working with young people in your church, or your community, or in your employment, (and have passed all the necessary checks for that work, e.g. criminal records checks, etc.).

Shelter of Care cannot support any volunteer financially. Therefore, it is important that you consider ways of raising finance for the trip, including travel expenses, airport transfers, any costs of food or lodging (depending on the purpose of the visit) and other expenses which may be incurred whilst in Romania. You will be responsible for arranging your own travel itinerary and ensuring that you have the relevant travel insurance/medical cover and visa (if travelling from outside the EU).

Bringing a Team

If you are planning to bring a team of volunteers to Romania, then we recommend selecting an appropriate team member to be the leader of the group. This leader should be the liaison point between the team and Shelter of Care, and should take responsibility for ensuring all team members are fully prepared and that each one meets our requirements for volunteers.

In Summary

To volunteer, you should be:

  • a committed Christian, able to give details of your personal testimony
  • a regular attender (preferably a member) at church
  • accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a person in leadership at that church (a Pastor or Minister or equivalent). Please note that a Shelter of Care representative may follow up the recommendation via email or telephone
  • experienced in relevant paid or voluntary work, through church, employment or in your community
  • entirely self-funding, including travel and living expenses

How to Contact Us

If you would like to consider volunteering, or if you would simply like more information, please contact us by email, giving relevant information about yourself, and stating which aspect of Shelter of Care's work you are interested in.

Opportunities for Volunteers

Summer Camp

We always welcome individuals and teams of volunteers for our annual Summer Camp. Each year, we take 20-25 girls away for 8-10 days of Bible teaching, crafts, sports and fun. The camp usually takes place during the first two weeks in August.

Consider volunteering for this if you:

  • have experience working with children and young people
  • have two weeks to spare in August
  • enjoy building relationships with young people in a small group setting
  • enjoy creating and participating in craft activities with young people
  • enjoy sports and would like to help organise sports activities with the girls

Project Amos

Project Amos, our city-based resource for young people, provides many opportunities for potential volunteers, both short and long-term.

Consider short-term volunteering if you:

  • have experience working with children and young people
  • are available during school vacations
  • enjoy creating and participating in craft activities with children and young people
  • could work as part of a team to devise and deliver a week-long program of activities

Consider long-term volunteering if you:

  • are able to guarantee your own funding for an extended period (including living expenses)
  • are prepared to learn Romanian
  • want to build long-term relationships with individual young people and small groups
  • can develop/deliver appropriate life skills training courses
  • have experience creating/delivering Bible studies and Christian activities for young people
  • are willing to stand with young people in times of urgent need or crisis, providing on-call practical support
  • are computer literate, and able to develop/deliver computer literacy training courses for young people
